Government of India releases lower 6 GHz band to Wi-Fi
It has been a long time coming but this week the Government of India finally released the lower 6 GHz band (5925–6425 MHz) to Wi-Fi. The regulation has been agreed upon in principle although the Indian regulator is still asking for comment to the draft rules. We expect the rules to align closely with similar rules in Europe and elsewhere for low power and very low power (indoor) usage. We will have a lot more to say about this important development shortly.
DSA & Wi-Fi community call for release of upper 6 GHz band in Europe
This week the Dynamic Spectrum Alliance (DSA) and partners called for the release of the top half of the 6 GHz band to Wi-Fi in Europe. The open letter was directed to the European Commission’s Executive VP for Technological Sovereignty, Security, and Democracy, Henna Virkkunen and was signed by 58 Wi-Fi industry organisations and companies, among them the Wi-Fi Alliance, the FTTH Council Europe, many vendors, and a good selection of service providers. “Without additional Wi-Fi spectrum, European businesses will be less globally competitive due to higher wireless connectivity costs and less access to new technologies,” the letter says.
Spectrum becomes fastest-growing Wi-Fi 7 service provider, company says
Spectrum says it has become the fastest growing Wi-Fi 7 CSP in the US, tripling its deployment of Wi-Fi 7 routers in first quarter of this year. The conclusion is based on analysis of Ookla speed test data, which also reveals that Spectrum Wi-Fi 7 customers are experiencing speeds 86% faster than WiFi 6 (826 vs. 443 Mbps), Spectrum says. Spectrum (Charter) won a WiFi NOW Award for Best Wi-Fi Service Provider in 2024 – read more here – and spoke at WWC USA in Mountain View just two weeks ago.
