Roundup: MediaTek at COMPUTEX, WLAN keeps growing, TP-Link’s first Wi-Fi 8 router, & Ookla’s Wi-Fi report

MediaTek wins two Best Choice awards at COMPUTEX

MediaTek’s Wi-Fi 8 platforms made a significant impact at this year’s COMPUTEX event in Taiwan as two of the company’s new Wi-Fi 8 silicon solutions came away with awards: The Filogic 8000 series platform won the COMPUTEX Best Choice Gold Award “for its breakthrough achievement as the world’s first cross-generation interoperable Wi-Fi 8 chipset,” MediaTek says.

Meanwhile the Filogic 8800 flagship chipset won a COMPUTEX Best Choice Category Award “for its AI-driven Wi-Fi 8 flagship tri-band router platform, which is designed to deliver faster, smarter, and more reliable Wi-Fi experiences.” MediaTek has consistently been ramping up its focus on Wi-Fi 8 technology during the past year including introducing a number of new features that extend beyond the Wi-Fi 8 standard. Dell’Oro Group: WLAN market continues double-digit growth in 1Q 2026

Dell’Oro Group’s latest WLAN Quarterly Report reveals that 1Q 2026 WLAN revenues experienced 14% growth in unit shipments with “an average selling price that is beginning to creep up,” Dell’Oro Group said in a research note. Some vendors have increased selling prices in response to the shortage and increasing cost of memory components caused by the AI infrastructure boom, the company said.

Cisco, Huawei, and Ubiquiti are leading the Wi-Fi 7 market, which overall grew by triple digits during the period. Wi-Fi 7 represented only 37% of indoor Wi-Fi APs shipped in 1Q2026, which means the opportunity for generational upgrades is still significant. The report can be found here.

TP-Link announces first Wi-Fi 8 router platform dubbed Archer 8

TP-Link has announced that its first Wi-Fi 8 router platform is targeted for launch this October and that the new Archer 8 solution “represents TP-Link’s next step toward delivering more stable, lower-latency connectivity designed for increasingly dense and demanding home environments,” the company said in a press release. “For years, Wi-Fi innovation has been measured by peak theoretical speeds. But what users actually care about is consistency. Archer 8 is designed to deliver exactly that: lower latency, better performance under interference, and more stable connectivity in real world environments,” said Jeff Barney, President of TP-Link Systems Inc. TP-Link has conducted lab testing comparing early Wi-Fi 8 routers against Wi-Fi 7 under simulated real-world home conditions – all with highly promising results. See the full news release here for more details.

Somewhat discouraging: Ookla’s voluminous Wi-Fi connectivity report

Ookla – meaning Speedtest.net – has published a huge and detailed report on the state of (mostly) Wi-Fi 7 and 6 GHz adoption around the world (the full report can be found here). In short, Wi-Fi 7 adoption is described as ‘nascent’ in most parts of the world (including in Europe) with some outliers including Singapore leading adoption at 25% Wi-Fi 7 users. Meanwhile, the US leads on the use of the 6 GHz band with 13.8% of Speedtest users connecting over the 6 GHz band. Much of the reading is not exactly uplifting considering that both Wi-Fi 7 and 6 GHz spectrum have been available for a number of years.
