Reliable indoor mobile coverage is becoming more important while also becoming more difficult and expensive to deliver. In this detailed post-webinar report, we examine why Wi-Fi is emerging as an essential complement to cellular infrastructure and with HeliumOS.

For years, the enterprise wireless industry has debated the relative merits of Wi-Fi and private 5G. The more important question may now be whether enterprises should be choosing between them at all. A new generation of converged networking platforms proposes that Wi-Fi, private 5G, public cellular, and even satellite should instead become complementary components of a common enterprise connectivity fabric.

Wi-Fi offload is not returning because of a sudden technical breakthrough. What has changed is the commercial and network environment in which these technologies can be used. Today, mobile operators face a growing indoor coverage problem.

If mobile devices could automatically move traffic from cellular to Wi-Fi, operators could dramatically reduce congestion while postponing expensive investments in new spectrum and additional cell sites. The vision was compelling. The reality proved considerably more complicated.

Consumers increasingly regard reliable indoor coverage as a basic expectation rather than a premium service. At the same time, mobile operators in many mature markets continue to face intense price competition, relatively flat revenue growth, and ever-increasing investment requirements for 5G networks.
