Plume IQ – the data analytics service of home broadband services platform provider Plume – extracts anonymised data from 2.5 billion connected devices in 55 million locations across the US, Europe, & Japan. And every month Plume IQ reveals new insights into consumer behaviour within the home. This month’s insights report is all about data consumption, gaming, & security.
Home data consumption rises 11%, 7%, and 16% 2022-2023
It may not be as skyrocketing as during the work-from-home era, but home data consumption is still growing. Plume IQ’s new numbers from the US, Europe, and Japan says the growth rate over roughly the past year has been 11%, 7%, and 16% for the three regions & countries, respectively. VR is the fastest growing device segment with 30% data consumption growth year-on-year, Plume IQ says.
Gaming traffic is way up over the 2023 Christmas holiday season
Gaming traffic spiked as much as +81% over the 2023 holidays compared to the 2022 Christmas holiday season, Plume IQ says. Something unusual is clearly happening here. Perhaps at least part of the reason could be new products by Nintendo? Plume IQ says the new Nintendo Switch console was clearly the most popular among new gaming devices. It is impressive how the Kyoto-based Nintendo company keeps innovating and reinventing the gaming console category. Nintendo’s stock is up 50% over the past year.
Security: Malware, botnets, spyware are way up
But not all is fun and games. It even appears that bad actors are ramping up their activities – in particular in the US. Plume IQ says malware is up by a stunning 91% year-on-year from 2022 to 2023, while botnets are up a no less staggering 153% for the same period (see details below). If you’re living in the US it may be time to think about additional protection on your home network.
